If you're on here, you already know that my dad had an accident, but I want to explain what happened.
On Monday, June 29th at about 10:15 dad climbed up on a ladder to get on the roof of their house. He slipped (not the most graceful man) and he fell to the driveway about 12 feet below. He landed on his knees. Luckily, Dennis who is his next door neighbor and works with my dad was there with his workers. They immediately called 911 and then went next door to get my grandad (a physician).
When the ambulance arrived they asked where to take dad. It was decided that he needed to go to Baptist Health South in Montgomery, AL. The EMT's took him directly to a local park where a helicopter could land.
He arrived at the hospital at about 12 pm. My mom and grandparents drove. He was still conscious and having immense trouble dealing with the pain so they put him in a medically induced coma.
We found out later that the trauma team usually consults within an hour of the incident, but this time they were tripping over each other to do the consult for my dad. They were done in 15 minutes!
At this point he had:
2 shattered kneecaps
both femurs were broken from the bottom to the middle of the bone and
both femurs were broken at the neck (almost where they connect to the hip)
Multiple facial fractures (jaw bone and palette to name 2)
His nose was completely broken
They took him back for surgery at 7:15 pm and finished at 11:30 pm. He stayed stable during the whole surgery so they were able to put rods, pins and bolts in both femurs. Unfortunately the kneecaps were beyond repair and they had to remove them completely.
Since then, he has continued to remain stable, but not able to be taken off sedation or off the ventilator. On Thursday they attempted to wake him, but the pain was too great and they had to put him back under.
It is now Saturday and we are still praying continuously for his recovery. We see him 4 times a day for 30 minutes each visit. Tomorrow they will try to wake him again. I'll keep you posted!
God has been great to us! We know that we will get to hear dad talk and laugh and smile and make stupid jokes again soon. We miss him tremendously right now.

ReplyDeleteI have been following your Dad's progress through an email from my Sunday School class. My dad also fell off of a roof on New Year's Eve in 2007. My dad was also very emotional, which made me very emotional. I already had tremendous guilt because it was my roof he fell off. You and your dad will have a long rough road ahead of you, but you all seem to have a great support network. Just keep praying! This is something that you can get through, even though it doesn't seem like it now. I'll keep you in my prayers. Christi Ledbetter
ReplyDeletePraise God and welcome back Steve!!
ReplyDeleteOurs prayers keep coming for you.
